Shortly after leaving high school I began traveling the States and Canada, typically driving and treking for a few months each spring and summer season. Prior to my first trip out West, Oregon, Washington, Montana, and so on. I acquired my first 35mm camera and the rest is history. One day around sunset I began talking with a professional travel photographer at a location called Ruby Beach. When I found out that this is what he provided for a living I was blown away! During my long drive back home to Michigan I made the decision that this is what I was going to do as a career. I had no concept how to tackle it however all of it appears to have exercised. I taught myself, both the photography part of things along with the organization element.

How would you explain your design of Photography?

My current body of polar images came about after seeing the work of Frank Hurley, the professional photographer on the Endurance Expeditions of 1914 to Antarctica. As soon as I saw the images and read the story I was hooked and had to see the location for myself.

I was detected with Type 1 Diabetes when I was 13 and learned that one of the many issues that might become a truth is blindness. Thats what got me travelling the World, desiring to see as much as I might just in case. Currently as I write Im doing so without the use of one eye, something that simply took place for which Ill be going into surgical treatment for in a few days.

I think my work and style is extremely straight forward. I attempt to capture the light, subject and situation that is right there, right in front of me, especially the most important element to an excellent photo in my opinion, the light. Among my weaknesses as a “studio/fashion” photographer was that I had a difficult time producing light. Put me out on area and I can see it, work with it and know when something isnt fascinating or ideal.

Your Passion behind this constant travel and expedition is extraordinary. Couple of words on it?

You have a fantastic eye for Natures beauty, how did you get it?

Obviously a fascinating topic goes without stating and finding out good compositional skills are essential. So, essential things to look for are ways to utilize lines in nature to draw the viewer into the scene, textures, curiosity that may stand apart, and components to possibly frame the topic can elevate an OK shot into something far more initial and fascinating.

No one professional photographer has been a real inspiration. When I initially started shooting and had an interest in style the work I saw in Italian Vogue truly got my attention. Much more intriguing lighting in that publication than what I saw in American variations.

Your equipment?

Likewise in my package is a series of Singh-Ray Split Grad ND filters, ND filters and a polarizing filter in addition to other basics crammed in a Lowe Pro Photo Trekker AW II pack.

Its one thing to be out and to witness a lovely place another to catch a fascinating photograph. Such was the case when I first started shooting nature and travel again after 7 years with the fashion world. I returned after a few days of shooting there only to see from the film that I had actually “recorded” a very dramatic landscape however had stopped working to catch a single frame that stood out.

Now I invest a lot time going back to an area, over and over, year after year in some cases, until everything comes together. Its so simple to take a picture of a beautiful place however to record it when all the components come together is what I and I d state any accomplished photographer would agree makes the difference.

For landscape shooting a good, easy to change tripod and ballhead are vital. I have two sets of Gitzo carbon fiber legs, a Really Right Stuff BH-55 ballhead and an Acratech GP ballhead.

Your Inspiration?

Ive constantly used Nikon equipment. This includes Nikon D800s, D600, D3x and numerous Nikkor lenses. Present favorites are the brand-new Nikkor 80-400mm and the 28-300mm for the travel work I do. Ive been shooting a good deal in Antarctica and the Arctic recently, sometimes under hard conditions, and the great focal variety of both of these enables me to grab shots I might have missed out on otherwise. I enjoy the compact size of the 28-300mm. I also use a Nikkor 16-35mm and 105mm macro a great deal.

Thank you, any last words of recommendations for candidates in this field?
