Overall, the EM1 Mk III is a fantastic camera that works best when you inform it where to focus. This is real of older video cameras like the Sony a7r III and the Canon EOS R. I still use these cams almost weekly and am impressed at how smart their autofocus system is in spite of not having the most sophisticated ones on the market.

One of the latest updates to the Olympus EM1 Mk II brought an improvement to autofocusing with single-focal length lenses. Basically, its supposed to improve the accuracy of the focusing. To actually see what this can do, we utilized the EM1 Mk III with the 17mm f1.2 PRO, one of my favorite lenses for the system. Here are my notes from the testing:

If youre into by hand selecting autofocus points and all, the EM1 Mk III is an outstanding cam.

Overall, utilizing the EM1 Mk III is a significant difference between the EM1x and the OM System OM1. What Im still stunned by is that the AI autofocus algorithms never ever made it to this camera. However if youre into by hand choosing autofocus points and all, the EM1 Mk III is an outstanding cam.

Its frustrating that it never got the AI update the Olympus EM1x and the OM System OM1 have.
Going back to this menu is such a blast from the past.
Accuracy seems extremely accurate even with the tiniest AF point.
C-AF is extremely, great once it locks onto a moving subject. If only it were better at seeing faces, then this camera would be fantastic for street photography.
Canon EOS R and 50mm f1.2 seem better still.
Face detection is not so excellent for street photography, and utilizing it isnt reliable. The “cluster AF” as previous staffer Robin Wong mentions in his own videos, isnt all trustworthy for something like this. Youre far better off informing the cam exactly where you desire it to focus.
Faces requirement to use up around 1/4 of the frame for the finest results.
The accuracy of the autofocus is still great even with the tiniest autofocus points and in low light.
Disabling the simulated OVF setting and the Live View boost settings dont dim the screen a lot in underexposed conditions. The autofocus will still work well other than in the locations with incredibly low contrast.

While its its not terrific at everything, there are a few things about the EM1 Mk III that still make it a terrific cam. The pattern these days is that so numerous video cameras can be terrific at whatever. Overall, the EM1 Mk III is a great camera that works best when you inform it where to focus.
